Tremec TKX Ready to Rock Your LS Build
Newest manual from Tremec, TKX five-speed built specifically for the aftermarket, can handle up to 600 lb-ft of torque!
When it comes to your LS build of choice, finding the right transmission to handle it all is a job in itself. One of the more popular options are the transmissions from Tremec. After all, they’re already found in plenty of GM models, from classic Chevelles and GTOs, to modern Camaros and the mid-engine Corvette. And why not? Tremec’s offerings are tough and more than capable of handling the job.
While classics like the Magnum T-56 and T-5 found their way out of the factory to the aftermarket, Tremec has a new offering made specifically for the aftermarket. Through American Powertrain comes the debut of the TKX.
Replacing the legendary TKO is no small task. However, the TKX is up to the task. For starters, the five-speed manual can handle tons of torque from your LS build, all the way up to 600 lb-ft. The transmission can run engine speeds up to 8,000 rpm, with shifts coming in at 7,500 rpm.
Yet, there’s more! If you ever wanted a TKO, only to learn it couldn’t fit without cutting into the tunnel and floorpan, there’s good news. The TKX boasts a slimmer, more compact profile overall than the old TKO. All you need to do is decide which of the three positions you’ll use to connect you to your car.
The TKX comes in three styles for GM products, each with a 26-spline input shaft linked to a 31-spline output shaft for tons of strength. Shifting is clean and crisp, NVH is minimized through gear layout, and the gears and shafts are made from ASTM 4615 special-grade steel to handle the 600 lb-ft of neck-snapping torque from your LS build.
If you want one of these new Tremec TKX transmissions, all you need is $2,795. The three options come with fifth gear ratios of 0.68, 0.72 and 0.81. For nearly $3,000, though, you’ll have one of the strongest manual transmissions on the market today.
As for when you can get your hands on one, orders are being taken now. Tremec is scheduled to deliver the first units on November 30.
