Default has anyone installed a tranny cooler that has its own fan?

if so could you tell me the info and parts you used.

I am thinking I need more cooling for the hot summer traffic... my tranny is feeling it... or on a fast trip up the local mountains.

I work in the construction industy and run big equipment and alwayz see external coolers that have a dedicated fan. I was thinking of installing on in my car but not sure if there are other options.

lemme know please.

if not one has I guess i'll be the guieny pig and figure it out cuz I see the perfect spot for this type of unit down by the horns... just remove the plastic and put it there in front of the air dam.

Ive been wondering this too, but have not gotten any response. Im sure someone on here has used one or is currently using one. I know its a nice yet expensive upgrade, but Im sure its worth it. Hopefully someone will chime in.

I'm using a Derale 16 pass cooler in front of the radiator. It's a very tight fit, but it's one of the largest that are our there. You can even get the Derale temperature sensor for 20 bucks to kick the fan on and off.

http://www.derale.com/fanmountedoilcoolers.shtml It's the one at the top.

Most people get plenty of cooling from a 19 - 24K passive cooler mounted on the A/C condersor or radiator. If you have good airflow or your engine fans run alot, you shouldn't need a cooler with its own fan. If you have long slow trips up mountains in 2nd gear you might have a need.

My fans run a lot and I don't want to add to the electrical load on a hot day.

A deeper tranny pan with cooling fins or tubes will also help.

I beleive that when I had custom tuning that the fans were set to come on sooner. Im running the FTRA, so mounting just a good size cooler is kind of difficult to do because of the inadequate airflow. I really dont want to cut, remove, modify, etc. anything so that Im able to run both the FTRA and cooler. This is the reason why I considered running a cooler with its own fan. Problem is, Im just trying to figure out which one to go with. Thanks

ive got the FTRA too, i got a thin line cooler (3/4)for 46 bucks from summit. I mounted it behind the radiator, in front of the fans, it fits well.

im not gonna pay $200 for a cooler with a fan on it, not worth it!

I agree that 200 bux is a little steep for a trans cooler, but come on, isn't 200 better tha 2000 for a new trans? we spend all this money on going fast, but brakes and coolers are usually the stuff we forget about or do last...sux, but we do it.

Tranny cooler+fan works great, I ran one on my 69 camaro and never had a problem.

No, it is not worth it. A $50 plate type cooler will provide all the cooling you need except under the rarest of circumstances. Most likely you're just adding to engine's electrical load and not acheiving anything.

Most heavy LS1 modders have a passive cooler and a 160 T-stat with matching fan settings and that system works fine. A good deep pan is passive and adds additional insurance. Even a deep pan and plate cooler is less than a cooler & fan combo.

I run a 28k GVW cooler with a spal fan. I have the fan on a manual switch. But I am running a heavily modified racing tranny, with a large stall. For a 4L60E that may be overkill.

But how would I run a nice size cooler without chopping the FTRA up? I really dont want to relocate, cut, modify, etc. anything so that I can run both the cooler and the ram air kit. I dont wanna touch the FTRA at all. Is there any where that I can mount the cooler that will get plenty of air and not have to modify anything? I figured that the cooling system would be the solution for me. I can mount it anywhere and it doesnt matter if its mounted where the air doesnt travels because it has its own fan and comes on when it reaches a certain temperature. I thought it was worth it, but I do agree, its a little expensive. I wanted to run at least a 24k GVW, but would like to run the 28k. I know the 28k is big in size, so Im not sure that I could run that with the FTRA, but thats just my guesstimate. I like the fact that it will kick on by itself, that way I wont have to worry about installing a tranny temp. gauge. and moniter it all the time and then have to install a manual switch to turn the fan(s) on. But then again, Im going to anyway, but its not nesessary. (install a tranny temp. guage) You really dont think its worth it? I really dont want to shove/squeeze it in either. Is there a solution that fits my my standards or is the only option for me is to buy the cooling system? Thanks

Plenty of people mount a cooler with FTRA.

I've thought about this some, but haven't gotten
the bug to do it.

What you want is to go to an electronics surplus
place and look for some 5" muffin fans that are
already mounted to a sheet metal plate. Computer
cooling stuff. These will be cheap, already
cadmium plated and cut for the right size fan,
saving you the work. You can bend the sheet metal
and/or pop-rivet up a shroud that keeps the flow
through the fins.

Then, you ditch the 115V fan and put on 1 (or N)
12VDC muffin fans instead. The good ones draw
under 500mA and won't be any kind of significant
load. You can direct-control them with a Selco
thermostat (a few bucks from electronics dist's)
or just run the fan full time.

The fans are not weatherproof so you'd want to
mount the whole assembly out of the road spray.
But there's plenty of empty nose air space above
the plastic.

Here's how I have mine http://www.johnbrown.net/wilwaxu/transcooler

It will require one hole for a bolt.

jimmy:
what are those fans rated at for CFM's? I have a hard time believing they flow enough to disipate the heat generated by a tranny and it needs to compete for airflow against the stock cooling fans which draw hundreds of CFM.

An unlocked converter at WOT eats a minimum of 10HP. W/O digging out my physics text, I'm not sure the electrical current flow that is equal to that, but it is a lot more than my computer draws.

In my Mouser catalog they have a 12V fan
rated 79CFM at 380mA. These would run you
$16 a pop (new). Maybe use two for a normal
6" x 12" - ish cooler and that oughtta be
relatively adequate, especially if you also
run through the stock trans exchanger.

But I guess you ought to be somewhat
selective in picking the fan, since there
are also some in the book with very low
CFM ratings.
