I'm finally here after pressure from Fierofly to start a build thread. After all, who gets tired of ls swaps into Porsches. I've been on the fence about this build for several years now and finally taking the plunge. Here is my car, and what happened to the original engine. Hey, that piston isn't supposed to be broken off.
So what would any self respecting Porsche owner do? I was on a budget and couldn't afford a M96 engine rebuild so I swapped a same block Porsche Boxster S 3.2 engine into the car. It was a pretty straightforward budget M96lite swap. Only lasted 10 months before another spun bearing. Not even gunning it.. coasting at 65 on a rainy day.
Man you're gonna get a lot of crap for a small bore NA iron block in a Porsche. Maybe if it was a C10 or an FC...... That thing is gonna handle like a dumbbell on the end of a rope.
Wow. You guys are being pretty tough. It looks like a blast to me. Can't different drivers vary in a weight that exceeds the difference between an iron block and an aluminum one? I know the weight is further forward but it is also just on one side. I have no experience with rear engine cars but the op does know Fierofly who does have the experience.
Dont listen to haters, just get it done! Its lookin like its gonna be a sweet build, i would love to do a Porsche swap one day..... Honestly if it handles terribly at least your all set up to swap out an aluminum block down the road alot easier anyways. Internet crap talkers blow my mind.
~120 lbs different in weight. Even if you sat another person in the car that could mean the difference but with the Porsche swap that is like having a dead teenager in your trunk all the time.
Hang on folks, this is an aluminum block 5.3 HO engine from an 05 silverado. Its kinda like an L33 but I think the proper designation for the one I have is an LY6.
As for the assumption that Porsche engines are reliable, they are. Ask any 993, 911, 928, or 944 owner. Its just the first few years of the 996 water cooled engine had a bunch of issues.
The factory M96 engine produced 300hp at the crank.. with very little mods that can bring significant rise in HP available for performance. There is a turbo kit that costs $10k.
If I get the increased reliability and at least 350HP im getting close to being in the range of power that a 996 GT3 has for a lot less money.
For the people talking about a passenger making a bigger difference, you need to shut up. You have no idea what you're talking about. There are these awesome things called weight distribution, center of gravity, chassis tuning, etc. And a human does not carry weight the same as an engine block.
One of those 'while you were there jobs' was the synchros. Here are some shots of synchro replacement for 1st and 2nd. The other gears synchros looked brand new. The zip tie you see in the last shot was used to keep the shifter rods aligned while the case was reinstalled.
Yes, the kit is from Renegade. If I trusted myself better with fabrication the kit itself isn't rocket science. I only got the basic LS kit and did not go with their cooling system or power steering setup. Most of the swaps delete power steering, and I have my own setup for cooling.
Here is the install of the fuel system. I used the standard corvette pressure regulator/filter. If you notice the hard 1/2in black tube next to the fuel line, that is the line you connect the vacuum to for the brake booster.

LOOKING GOOD ! , I used the power steering kit from RH with a cut out switch. I've driven it with, and without, I like the WITH a lot better. Fuel lines ?, so on your year model you had 3, 1 for fuel pressure, 1 for return, 1 for tank vent that went to air pump ? My 2003 only had 2, 1 for pressure, 1 for vent.

Yeah after the iron discussion I noticed the sleeves. Aluminum is much more appropriate for an exotic build. I'm just waiting for a 996 with an IMS failure around here and I'm on it. I wouldn't do anything less than an LS3 though
