T56 is now mounted to the LS1 and installed in the car. I used the factory FORD tranny crossmember in the stock location for GT cars.
Mustang GT T45 transmissions and Mustang Cobra T45 transmissions have different locations where the crossmember bolts to the tailshaft. The Cobra mounts about an inch or two towards the front of the car. I had a GT T45 in my car, so the mounts had already been relocated to fit.
The T56 bolts in at the exact same location. Just have to round out one of the factory bolt holes in the crossmember for the T56 bolt to fit through the hole.
There are a few locations the tranny meets the floor board. Nothing a BFH can't fix.
The shifter hole is the only downside. The shifter mount is about 3 inches too far back. The floor WILL have to be cut, and the shifter modified, to put a shifter on and keep it close to the stock location.
The LS1 slave cylinder for the clutch will fit right in the stock hole for the clutch cable, but some sort of linkage or bracketry will need to be fabricated to make the pedal work with the slave cylinder. Haven't figured that out yet.
Also, the Ford driveshaft is almost the right size to work. It's about a half inch too long, and of course it has the wrong teeth for the tranny output shaft.
**EDIT, just labeling the pics for clarity**
First: Crossmember mounted to tranny
Second: GM Slave Cylinder location next to Ford clutch quadrant (quadrant is the Blue Billet thing, and the Slave cylinder is the rusty thing on the right)
Third: Shifter location
Fourth: Tranny and crossmember mounted and installed
Fifth: Slave Cylinder through the firewall at the stock clutch cable location

Use the shift arm from a B&M shifter for the GTO bolted (backwards) to the regular F-body shifter base, and you should be cool. Alternately, there is supposedly a mid-shift kit availabe for the T-56 that moves the shifter several inches forward. I'm not sure who makes it, but I've seen it in magazines at least twice.

I'll find out tomorrow how well it fits, and I'll get some pics up.

It was something I had considered, but didn't have the time or money to figure out.
If someone has a Cobra T56 and can set it next to the LS1 T56 and see where the shifter locations are, that may help someone else doing the swap. I'd assume the bellhousings would be interchangable between the 2 trannies.

Any info on the bellhousing? Does it use a fork and cable, or still use hydraulics?

I think it uses a fork. There was a huge writeup about it in Hot Rod a few months back. It will fit damn near any T-series trans to damn near any motor. It's quite revolutionary.

Some T56 dimensions:

Wander if you could use a cable clutch with the Ford Inputshaft and a adapt a mustang bellhousing or McLeod bellhousing to the LS1. The depth of the bellhousing looks to be the 4" you need for it to line up.

Mystic96???
Yo Mystic96, I was just wondering if you have made any progress on
your LS1 mustang? If not, I hope there will be an update soon. I'm just anxious to see how yours turns out. Good Luck!

Waiting on the wiring harness from Speartech, and some fuel lines and fittings. Then I'll just need a driveshaft, figure out the cooling, and somehow get this clutch to work. That's my biggest hang up right now.

None yet...
The car is at the painter's right now. Once I get the shell back, I'll begin reinstalling all the parts for hopefully a final time.
Then I'll start trying to figure out this wiring harness from Speartech.
Still haven't figured out making a clutch setup work yet. May take a little redneck engineering to get it going...

what about floor mounted pedals directly to the MC, like a street rod? I really wnat you to figure this out, since I refuse to run an auto in my future Fox notch swap!
I already have a 3.73 8.8, complete 13" Cobra front brake conversion, 02 GT wheels, 94+ rear discs, next up getting a SN K member and the exhaust. I'm accumulating all the parts first, then....

that could be an option, but i'm trying to keep the rest of the car as unmolested as possible.
I'd still really like to keep the master cylinder located in the clutch cable hole, but if I could find a place lower on the firewall or wheel well, then I'd put it there.

Mystic 96, idea....
Why not try to use a clutch master cylinder from a early 90's Chevy S10 2.8 V6. I just changed one for a friend. The master cyl. is about 4 inches long, 1 1/4 inch diameter, or about the size of a jumbo hot dog. A small hose attaches to the remote mounted fluid reservoir, you could lengthen/shorten the hose mount it where you want on the firewall. A small plastic line runs to the small slave cyl. which shouldn't be too hard to adapt to the T56, 2 bolts. Get the pivot attachment point on the pedal from a junk S10, then maybe weld or drill/tap to your existing pedal assembly. Check it out, it just might work. Good Luck!!
