yay the fun part begins. comments, suggestions, opinions on the rebuild? the sky is the limit .... as long as its with in a budget of 4k lol that's what i have set aside for the rebuild of the motor. i already have my eye on a pair of rhs heads. basically because for the price of them new is about what it would cost to have mine reworked.. well from the quotes iv received so far

so i have the motor down to the block... what can i use to clean the parts. the block is getting sent out for honing, cam bearings, cleaned etc. but the rods, rockers, lifters etc. i'd like to get them all cleaned up and then re oiled but i don't want to do any damage(if that's possible from cleaning them) i heard someone say just soak them in gas and then oil them after they are clean. any input, info ?

Iron block huh? Why not get a good low miledge L33 short block for like $300 and then you can reassemble with your old components? Better rods, lighter weight.

please elaborate, i was told this iron block(98 to 2002) was the block to have. i was going to use the stock bottom end just put new bearings and rings(gapped for turbo) in it. from what i read it should hold up to just about anything i throw at it. I'm a newbie to wrenching so if you have any ideas please share

Well, the L33 which is what I am using came in 2005+ silverados and probably some other vehicles, but is an aluminum block that weighs 80+ lbs less and has super thick sleeves. When I measured them they were around .240 thick. The last Darton aftermarket sleeves I measured were around .264 which is still super thick, but the L33 comes pretty close right from the factory! The rods in the 2005+ block are supposed to be better as well.

No worries, here is a picture of my L33 short block you can see the sleeve thickness if you look at it close:

As I am learning, it's the road blocks you get over that makes you better than your peers. Can't wait to hear that beast run.

So you going to run twin trans coolers on it without the one in the radiator?
