Cool Methanol 403 LsX - 98/101mm Turbo '87 Buick Grand National

So the new build has already begun. We started with a LsX block, losing the intercooler and switching over to methanol for fuel (10.7 CR). Going to try to still use the HP Tuners on the stock PCM & see how that works. EDIT: It didn't work out ... now have Holley Dominator EFI with boost controller & Love it!!!

Specs on engine:

std deck LsX Block
Wiseco -8cc dished pistons - 4.005" bore (PN: K394)
Callies I-beam rods - 6.125" (PN: CSC6125DS2A2AI)
Callies 4" Stroke Dragon Slayer (PN: APO31V-DS)
Coated Clevite Main & Rod bearings (PN: MS2199HK & CB663HNK)
ARP Head studs (PN: 234-4319)
ARP Main studs (PN: 234-5608)
Melling oil pump (PN: 10295)
ATI damper (PN: 917302) (f-body w/ no AC)

PRC LS3 Aftermarket 6-Bolt 255cc CNC Heads (PN: PRCLS36B250)
Stock LS3 rockers with Comp Trunion upgrade (PN: 13702)
Custom Hyd Roller Turbo Cam (238/238 .629/.629 114)
LS3 Victor Jr & Elbow (EDIT - now TPIS Sheetmetal ... AKA "Torque Stopper")
Moran 500lb Injectors (PN: MRE500A)
Nick Williams 102mm Cable TB (PN: NW102C)
Moran/Sys1 10 micron SS fuel filter (PN: MRE10M)
Aeromotive Black Atomic belt drive fuel pump (PN: 11115)

Turbo stuff (reused from the LQ4 last year):

-PTE PT4788 T6 0.96ar EDIT: Pass Front mount 101mm (g-trim 1.0a/r) turbo now
-5" Aluminum Downpipe
-JGS 60mm WG
-JGS 50mm BOV

Already have the Stock LQ4 6.0L removed from 1987 Buick Grand National from last year (2012 Build link below) to make way for progress. Will post pics up as we go. Goal power is I guess what the car will handle right now (Everything built for max 1500whp). I guess we will see. More to come soon.

Sounds like an interesting project. I believe you might of made a little typo on your rod length.

No where near enough turbine. Bet it chokes before 5500 rpm on methanol.

That combo needs a GT5518 minimum.

Yep thank you, fixed now.

To be honest, I was concerned with that myself. I foresee a swap early in the season.

Well to start this off the Block has gone off with the rotating assembley to the machine shop to get the block done and internals balanced. Two pics attached are one of the block and one of the new MRE/Sys1 10 SS micron fuel filter that just came in. The Moran injectors are on a 5 week build list now so I have some waiting to do on them. Also picked up a Sheetmetal Intake for LS3/L92 heads after finding out the L92 Victor w/ elbow would not fit under my hood (2.40" taller than ls1 victor which does fit). I'll post some pics of it when it gets in later today.

More pics and progress to come soon.

Should be bad ***! I agree on the larger turbine though, will be interesting to see the data you gather with that turbo though.

Intake came in, pics below. It's for Ls3/L92 style heads and 102mm TB. Its a little dirty but should clean up really well. Most importantly my stock hood will clear no problem (hated the idea of changing my hood).

Intake looks real nice. How much would one of those cost a guy?

TPIS gets $2300 to 2400 ish. I got lucky and picked it up with the Aeromotive rails/fittings for about 60% off the new intake price.

I really like the extra thick billets they start with at the bottom and top of each runner. The bottom billet (that bolts to the head) measures just over 1" thick. Even our Hogan's intake (SBC) isn't built that stout. Needless to say, I'm happy with the craftsmanship, we will see if it makes any power.

Wow, too rich for my blood! It is a very nice piece, looks very solid in construction.

Very clean intake. As Martin said, to expensive for me lol

What numbers are you guys expecting from this build?

Thanks.

Expecting, I'm really not sure to be honest because of the backpressure issues I know will be present with this pt4788. I'm hoping to see 900whp before i go over the 1.5 to 1 backpressure to boost ratio and it chokes out. Really just a guess until I get it on the dyno, tuned and take it to the track and actually see. Assuming a turbo swap (LF 94-106mm ... undecided) it should be north of 1200whp through the turbo 400 and 9". I guess we will see.

I've seen large frame G trim 94mm turbo's on 10.0:1 SBC with good 18* cylinder heads make 1600rwhp+ on no where near full boost. I think you're underestimating the power one of those turbo's can make. The number I quoted was also on Methanol.

Gotcha. The only reason I even included the 106mm is because of the dirt cheap prices they are selling for anymore. 94-98mm is most likely more realistic.

I have many sets of the 5.3 coils (round with heat sinks) so I'm going see how far I can go with them before the spark gets blown out.

I have been doing alot of reading on the stock coil subject. I have heard stories ranging from great experiences with stock coils and stock PCM over 1000whp to the other extreme of killing high $$$ engines with truck D585 coils (timing control under load) & an aftermarket EMS.

I always thought the D585 coils were the best of the pack and have read many claiming that, but then I find some that claim they are the worst (reputable sources from both sides) so now I'm not sure. I have both truck coils; D585 (round w/heat sink - my experience came of 5.3's) & Metco coils (-my experience came on 6.0L & 4.8L truck motors).

Anyone have input on either? I guess I can try both, just don't want to hurt anything in the process.

I hope everything turns out well for you. Should be a beast when fully done.
