I was reading this article and was wonder how much different is the L99 compared to the LS3. They said the automatic will make a few ponies less.

I wonder how much different these 2 motors are. Is it just the DOD and the tune or is it cam and heads?

DOD requires a different cam. I would assume it is just the tune and cam that gives it 17hp less. heads, intake and the rest should be the same. it probably has a higher volume oil pump to provide the AFM function though.

I am skeptical of this L99 engine.
I beleive that the mid-range engine will be a 360hp 6.0L L76 as found in the Pontiac G8.
I don't see the point of 2 V8's just over 20 hp apart.
I guess we'll find out if this is accurate on Monday.

Cylinder deactivation does not work with manual tranmissions. It's the same reason the Challenger with an automatic has deactivation and the one with a manual does not.

DOD has no place in a V8 Camaro. This will take the 5th gen Camaro off my shopping list for good.
Guess I'm now looking for deals on A6 C6s.....

DOD has every place in the automatic V8 camaro, especially with the ever tightening emission and milage standards!
they'll get around the DOD for those looking to go fast int he automatics, but for the average driver its a brilliant addition.
and its not like the new DOD technology is the same as cadillacs old 4 - 6 - 8

i would imagine DOD helps GM avoid a GG tax keeping the cost down on this car. if so i understand why its there. i wouldnt buy an auto but if it robs power id have it removed.
that BS skip shift on my GTO almost caused an accident a couple times because i couldnt put my car in the correct gear for the speed i was traveling. i had that **** removed ASAP.

I shouldn't have to pay for a tune on a brand new car just to get it to run the way I like.
Camaro is a muscle car, not a liberal MPG car. DOD has no place in a Camaro. It's shameful, IMO. If I can't get an LS3 + A6, then the new Camaro is useless to me.
But for those of you that don't understand why I feel this way, then good luck with your new Camaro. I'll just move on to a C6.

lets say you werent planning on modding the engine and you really wanted an auto. would you still be pissed that your car is using less gas than it could be using?

I don't think that Camaro SS/Z28/whatever should ever be a conformist car. Build a base model to give people better MPG and all the Camaro style with a small, high MPG engine. But don't **** with the V8.

It's a lame thing Chrysler started to market HEMIs to people scared of fuel consumption by convincing them they were saving something. GM jumped on the bandwagon in response.
I bought a G8 GT but I will be killing DoD when I start modding it.

Hate to break it to you but thats the way computer controlled cars are. Go buy your C6 A6 but your still going to have deal with torque management. If you buy a M6 you have to deal with skip shift and TM. GM knows your going to beat on it so they built in some protection.

can someone explain in a scientific, tangible way, how DoD harms performance? You rarely see V4 mode cruising in a truck or tahoe, and it doesnt last long. If DOD is what i think it is (displacement on demand, IE- the same as active fuel management), whats not to like about it? Hell you can barely get active fuel management to come on as it is, and only for a second. You so much as think of WOT and it wont be there, so whats the problem??
