I was curious if anyone made a vacuum operated muffler, or anything like it, like the one used on the new C6 Z06?? I guess electric would be okay too, but vacuum seems like it would be more reliable for that application.

I'm building a turbo setup and I want a quiet car. I know the turbine quiets it a lot, but you can't really run a chambered muffler. I mean you can, but it creates some serious limitations. I figured the best way to get around this is to get a muffler that goes to straight pipes when vacuum changes, like the c6 Z06 vette. A vacuum operated cutout would do almost the same thing, but if it's already wrapped into an aftermarket muffler, that would be even better for me! I'd be interested in either way, really... all I've found is electric and manual cutouts, and some talk about an electric muffler.

An easy way would be to take a cutout with a butterfly valve and put a spring on it to keep it closed. When the pressure increases, the spring will 'bleed off' exhaust giving essentialy the same effect. You could even vary the spring pressure depending on how loud or quiet you want it.
Just an idea... get a throttle body from a junk yard and do just that, spring operated exhaust cutout.

This is exactly what I saw hanging in the muffler shop. I just didn't describe it too well.

Haha no! I knew exactly what you're describing... I just want to know where to find one! That's pretty much the best thing asside from all-in-one muffler like on the displacement on demand engines GM and Chrysler make.
The spring would require backpressure, which is a serious enemy of a turbo exhaust system... the vacuum I think is the best way to go, kind of like a wastegate on a turbo...

You know, that would be really hot, to convert the
electric cutout to a vacuum-pull for closed, spring
for open. Just need a bellcrank on there.
I know my Caprice convertible had a funky vac
biscuit that pulled a flap in the manifold for the
opposite sort of thing, EGR backpressure thingy
I guess. But go to zero vacuum and cutout opens
automatically... sweet. Have to figure out where
that chunk of hardware went to.
