Default Dont use this mod!!!! Free Ram Air is Bad

I thougt that by cutting a hole in the plastic piece beneath the air filter on my 98 ls1 that airflow from the bottom airdam would increase power. First of all, I didn't notice any increase and then, after a couple of months I looked at my air filter and the part where the hole in plastic was beneath the filter was solid black. It took me hours to clean it. The amount of crap that gets stuck to filter from the road is not worth the minute increse in power.

But the reduction in IAT and the resistance to detonation is worth it. I went from the Suncoast SS ram air set up back to a standard lid with a front ram air set up (with the corresponding hole in the base) and eliminated 2-3 degrees of knock retard and reduced IAT byalmost 20 degrees.

LOL, you are probrably the only person that has ever said not to do it. Yes it gets dirty faster, because the air is getting sent up to the filter. Try using a SSRA, then you have to pick out the dragon flies, bees, and small childern.. lol.. J/K but I did have a bird get shoved in there one time. If you have a K&N or other filter like this it doesn't take long to clean. Take it out, smack it on the concrete a few times"not to hard" and the loose dirt will fall out. Then apply the cleaner, let sit for 10-20min, then rinse with a hose"not to high of pressure" let it dry, then lightly re-oil it.

Yes. Unless you're moving, the name of this mod should be changed to "intake warmer mod". All you're doing is sucking hot radiator air. I reversed my free ram air mod(replaced that plasic base piece) once it got really hot here, and actually noticed an IMPROVEMENT from before.

never been a fan of the free ram air mod. i feel either get a system like the FTRA or leave it alone. this way you'll have a professional design with a scoop instead of just a hole near your radiator to suck in dirt and hot air.

that's because you'll find a lot on this site if someone has a bad experienece and posts about it, they immediately get flamed. you get the insults from everyone that has the FRA "mod" bashing them and telling them they're wrong, personal attacks, cursing, you name it. a lot of people are straight up AFRAID to post negative experiences. look at some of the users that post when they have a bad experienece with a beloved sponsor. it's always their own fault, the sponsor couldn't have made a mistake (and eventually a sponsor is expected to make a mistake, no one is perfect and it's understandable, but that doesn't make it inappropriate to post about the negative experience).

i don't see much of a point to the FRA mod and will never do it. honestly, a lot if people just get the "placebo effect" from it. they feel a difference because they expect a difference. it's in their mind and will defend it to the death if they have to. these are the same people that swear their car is more powerful by adding even higher octane gasoline

IMO, save your money for a real induction kit. something with a scoop positioned away from the radiator to truly take in colder air. i'm gonna stick by the FTRA system after i've seen results from installuniversity. 1% greater engine efficiency and lower IAT temps PROVEN. lower their ET a tenth and added 1mph higher trap speed also. if i ever get some damn green in my wallet i'll buy one. looks like it won't be this month anyway, not the way my credit card is racking up gas and school expenses

maybe it'll be my xmas gift to myself...

Blah blah blah. I'm sick of hearing about heatsoak with the FRA. I let my car sit at idle for 10mins after driving the other day and the filter was barely warm. Now image the car moving.

lol
