Default For those who have the C5 brake upgrade

I was looking to do this a while back and talked to trackbird who seemed to have the best design on the bracket.

Since then it seems that a lot of companies have brackets out but I wonder if they are as good as trackbirds. One of the things that were good about trackbirds were how sturdy they were. They weren't suppose to flex like some of the other cheaper versions.

There was a long thread, I can't remember who started it, that did some testing I think and said the upgrade wasn't worth it.

Thanks for any input.

The original brackets were the Bob Bishop brackets. Those were THE best brackets. Lots of testing went into not only the design of the bracket, but the type of material used also. If I remember right, trackbird bought that design, made them for a while, then sold the design to hotpart who currently makes them.

There are other styles of brackets out there that...work I guess. I don't know if they are engineered any where near as good as the bishop brackets, but I will tell you, that by looking at them...I wouldn't use them.

Is the upgrade worth it...definitely. First off, you get a stronger caliper out of the deal, that houses a larger pad. Then you get a rotor 1" larger in diameter...that is a huge difference. It may not sound like much, but from a race standpoint...let's just say that people have spent tons of money just to use a rotor 1/2" larger.

There is a thread on frrax that has a comparison of a few of the different style brackets. Plus TONS of positive info on the swap.

Make sure you put hotpart, not hotparts haha. You'll see why when you try them both. Also J&M (hotpart) seems to have the "Bishop Brackets" on their site

i made my brackets at first. but i found that my mounting support for my caliper was SLIGHTLY off. i currectly run BMR's brackets and love them. have not had a problem. the only thing is my ABS doesnt work and the brakes are aggressive! love them tho

Hello,

The "Trackbrackets" are the original Bob Bishop brackets and a very nice bracket... they are now sold by J&M and I assume they are to the same quality as the originals.

If you would like another alternative please keep us in mind as well. We offer a light weight aluminum bracket. Some of the thinner steel brackets are known to flex and cause uneven pad wear.. the .600" thickness of our aluminum bracket will not flex and is being used on hundreds of vehicles with no failures. Our brackets are made from billet aluminum and 100% manufactured in our facility making them a USA product

I feel the upgrade is well worth it. The nice thing about the C5 kit is when you need replacement items such as rotors or pads, any parts store will have them and in most cases they are priced less than the F-Body components.

I attached a few pictures of the manufacturing processing... nothing fancy at all but just to give you an idea.

Hope this information is helpful, more information regarding the C5 conversion can be see here- http://www.umiperformance.com/page.php?page=c5conv whether its our brackets or another brand this link should help you.

Thanks!
Ryan

Ryan,

Thank you for the post. Your company makes everything! That doesn't seem to be a bad price on the kit. I don't know if it would be worth it to piece together a kit or not.

As you mentioned some brackets flex and cause uneven pad wear. That's one of the things I was worried about. Your brackets look pretty beefy.

I said "beefy"....

Glad I could help! And thanks for considering our brackets.. I assure you would not be disappointed with them. The brackets include all new hardware and detailed installation instructions. The kits include everything you need to complete the conversion. If you want to piece the kit together I have a list of GM part #'s you need.. just let me know and I can send it over.

Thanks again!
Ryan

the brembo c5 rotors are $20-30 cheaper for each one over the f-body ones.

IMO the first upgrade should be pads. I slapped a set of EBC yellows on my car and that is all the pad you'd ever need on the street. You could give yourself a concussion if you slammed on the brakes

do it repeatedly with ls1 calipers and you wont get the same results as with the c5 calipers. the c5 rotors also do not warp as easily.

I noticed the "bob bishop" brackets are made of 6061 aluminum while the UMI brackets are 2024. What make one allow "better" than the other for this application.

do the c-5 brakes grab more. like i know they do. but can you feel it. also if you put like the cts-v brakes on(brembo 4 piston) will it grad harder. like normally there is a split betwwent he front and the back. like 60 40 or what ever it is. when you put the bigger brakes on does it change the split. to like 75 25? thanks

I have a pair of the original Bishop brackets but
never got around to accumulating all the other
brake-swap pieces. Those suckers are some heavy
iron, unsprung weight. If I was a pay-retail kind
of guy I'd look seriously at aluminum ones.
