isn't there a way to accuratly check what diff. you have by a 'letter/number' in your glove box, or by the vin? i also have some pics on the differences between the 7.5,7 5/8, 8.5's. Although, with this info, I'm still yet to verify what diff. I actually have in my truck.(97' sonoma 4.3 5 spd.)

the best way is to just look at it. the 7.5 is more oval while the 8.5 is round. also look at the little fins on the bottom. you can check your rpo codes in your glovebox but im not sure which one it is. on s10forum there is an rpo decoder you can run your rpo through.

I know this is way off subject but I need a little help from fellow s10 ls1ers. Got all my wires hooked up to my factory locations to my Speartech harness and all I get is a clicking noise. I get 12 volts when I turn the key at the ign. wire. Is there something I am missing that needs voltage on the factory s10 harness? Thanks for any help you can give me guys!

The clicking noise is not the sound of the starter engaging. Its more quieter clicking noise.

Did you leave any of the original engine harness in? I know there are grounds and stuff that come from inside the truck that need to still be there.

LOL Yeah the battery is good. The main plug by the brake booster is the only thing left from the original harness. Could one of the wires from that plug need to be wired? Its a big oval shaped plug that my ign and constant hot wire go to. The plug itself has about 15 wires I think and that plug comes from the main firewall rectangle pug. Thanks for the help so far!

I think that the harness you are talking about needs to be hooked up. I have the wiring diagram that I used to make my harness at the shop I'll look tomorow to see if I can help you out. Sounds like to me the noise you here is the starter solenoid engaging. Do you have the big purple wire that goes to the starter hooked up?

The speartech harness has your standard wires to hook up like tach, temp, speed, pn switch, oil press, ign wire, battery (constant power). Most of those wires hook-up to that plug. So I removed the pins to the proper wire and hooked the wires togther. That plug still has some wires that are not hooked up to anything, so the plug cant be pluged in. Could it be that there is a ground in that plug or a wire that has to be hooked up. Ill try to take some pics this week to make it more clear.

No not at all, it was $450 for the reworked harness and another $300 for the reprogrammed computer. This is my first conversion harness and I am very pleased with the quality and service from John Speartech. He has my business on any further projects.

Although it sounds like on future projects, you might want to get a harness actually made for your swap... less problems afterwards if you aren't firmiliar with wiring.

As far as that big oval plug beside the brake booster....yes there are some things in that plug that need to be hooked up. That is there the main grounds come through and ground to the back of the heads. Now ALOT of the 15 or so wires are not needed...but just a few are needed, the purple wire for your starter goes through there and some for grounds and little things like that....So go back through...and find the grounds and hook them up...and then you should be back in business. I just went through this on my 1994 S10 LS1 swap....and after hours and hours on saturday....finally....i fugured out that same problem. And after i hooked up those grounds......turned the key over and it fired right up first try. It was so worth the wait and head scratching moments to hear that motor run for the first time on manifolds only....awesome.

trying to decide on a transmission for my sonoma/ls1 setup. i have a 4l60e that came with the motor, but i would prefer the manual, like a t56. but what other manual tranny would be a good choice, as far a fitment goes for my truck(fitment meaning no tranny tunnel mod.), with the ls1? i was thinking a t5 or something, but i want something that isnt going to explode with that motor.help me out, what do you guys think i should go with?
