Is there any preference on which high mount alternator kit to use to move it up? looks like this may be my only option with using the stock gto alt.

Here's three images that show the clearance between the 4th-gen F-body alternator and stock steering box when using the new Hooker engine mounting brackets...you may just get lucky with your GTO alternator as there is still room to spare.[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][IMG][/IMG][/IMG]

I did not measure that distance during the mock-up phase, but I can get it in about a week once the car starts being reassembled. As a point of reference, the coil bracket on the right side cylinder head is 1/4" to 5/16" away from the A/C evaporator case.

You have the basic gist of it down...the Hooker engine brackets are designed with lower installed geometry than you can get with using the stock SB Chevy engine side brackets and the typical flat LS swap plates. Using the sliding universal type brackets puts the engine up even higher as their adjustability comes at the expense of increased thickness.

How far set back are the hooker mounts? I was planning on using 1" set backs so my transmission stays and the same position. Looks like I'll need the high mount bracket for the gto alternator.

The gto alternator should fit in the stock location with setback plates.

So if you go with the F body accessories or even the GTO ones, what PS lines do you plan to use?

I guess I'll try it and if it doesn't fit I'll move it up. Hopefully some one else has a picture of the alternator clearance with 1" setbacks. Unless that's what the hooker mounts are?

I'm not sure about what ps lines, or radiator hoses to use.

Lower hose I used a 03 tahoe and upper for my l99 water pump (ls3 camaro water pump) I used the one in my build thread. I have the part number somewhere in the thread. But if you use a truck pump, my upper will not work since mine is on the driver side of the motor rather both inlet/outlets on the passenger side.

I've used setback plates with f-body accessories in the past and there were zero clearance issues. As far as I am aware, the gto alternator is spaced the same as an f-body and is in the same location. Post up what you come up with.

The issue with the gto alternator is that it has a clutch built into the pulley. So the pulley is about twice as deep as an f body alternator.

The Hooker mounts are 1/4 inch set back.

The set back of the Hooker mounts is approximately 1/4", so they will not work for someone who wants to leave their transmission in the stock location. There is a list of multiple issues that result from using a 1" set back in this application when you factor in the various transmissions that are used and I can only see the benefit being for someone determined to keep their 2004R in the stock location so they can reuse their stock driveshaft. You can get the engine in with 1" set-back plates, but you have to remove or notch the A/C evaporator case to do so and your engine inclination angle will not produce desirable U-joint working angles without.cutting up the trans tunnel and rebuilding it.

For everyone's benefit, I will test fit a GTO alternator into our Monte Carlo SS as it gets reassembled next week to confirm its compatibility with the new Hooker engine mounts and crossmember.

I've not heard one way or the other yet, but it will be sorted out by LS Fest.
