Default Ls1 Carb/distributor

i have a 98 ls1 engine that i have been wanting to put into an older vehicle, i will be going with a carb conversion. i see that gmpp has come out with a new front timing cover that allows the use of a distributor and a mechanical fuel pump. i am wondering if anybody has used this setup, and is there a waterpump out there that will clearance this new cover? also what distributor and fuel pump will work with this? i can't seem to find much info on this setup. any help is appreciated. i have thought about using the msd timing module, but i like the idea of being able to tune my engine the old fashion way. thanks

I'm in the same boat as you, VERY limited info on this set up. I did however see several cars using it on the Power Tour this year. Mostly on cars at the Year One booth, I'm considering giving them a call to see if they can point me in the right direction. I was told the distributor they use is sourced from a ford 351W.

thanks for the info, i did read the article in hi performance chevy, about this setup, but still not much info on parts availability. my main concern is that darn waterpump, there is just no way the stock one will clear. i work at a chevy dealership, and i can get the parts at cost, but there is no listing yet. hopefully soon though!

i put an lsx motor in to get rid of a dist, no reason to backtrack technology.
edelbrock and MSD both have their versions to fire the stock coils.

ive been 6900 rpms with it on a 6.0 and nitrous 6.50's 1/8 mile.
now have it on a 7500 rpm stroker running 6.30's 1/8 mile on motor.
never had an ounce of trouble out of it, but have heard stories of people having issues.

Glad it works for you. What type of issues? Can it run an EFI without a pcm?

something to do with the coil drivers. i dont think anyone or even msd knows how many is in the box. LOL. with high rpm, it breaks up.
also, even more so on a new motor, the box has to see 150 cranking rpm or the box will not fire.
i had 2 batteries on my 408 to get it fired over the 1st couple times. after a heat cycle, it fires up on the 1st hit.
buddies 6.0 rebuild did the same thing. voltage is very important.
it wont work as a standalone. it only sends spark. no fuel.
youll need the stock pcm for fueling, or some other type of aftermarket setup.
for 300 bucks, it does a good job, IMO.

Thanks, but it will stand alone with a carb right?

yes sir. you wont have a bit of trouble getting it all hooked up.
only 3 wires that actually require labor.
PWR
GRD
IGN
everything else is clearly labeled and plugs right in to the factory sensors.

I've seen that episode this morning, too. Can't remember what carb and intake it was, but they used a double roller timing chain, meziere electric water pump, and some spacers for the water pump so that it would clear the cover. And the distributor was a msd for a ford 302. Pretty interesting set up I think, made real good power on their dyno, too much work to do IMO, I would just keep it with the coils. I also remember them saying that the fuel pump was too much for the carb and would cause overflow or something, but great set up anyway.
