I wouldn't declare an M6 is faster than a tuned automatic, which mine was. Now its stalled too, which is a different deal, but yea...m6 vs auto is very subjective.

Don't think that the capability of a 4.6L to make power NA is the problem. It is an air pump like any other engine. I think it is more that the performance aftermarket along with Ford Racing & SVT chose to push the FI route for making power on these motors. Small displacement, high rpms and overhead cams seems to just work well with FI. Gains of anywhere between 80 to 120Hp can be achieved and most kits were just bolt-on and tune (not getting into the motor).
Nothing wrong with this approach it is just different than what most people were accustomed to with installing a cam with a set of good flowing heads much like imports uses 4 cylinders with a turbo. I just think it was more about bang for the buck than anything else and working with what you have. Not saying one is better, it is just different and dependent on personal preference of making power.
