Man I wished I could swing that. It's already going to be pretty tight enough just getting the machine work done though. I hate not having a job..... Besides, I already got the pistons and they're non-returnable.

Not sure what machine work you need done, but the shop that is part of the Baxters in Delta park does good work for cheap. It's a small shop though, so they're a little slower than others.

Somers Automotive Machine here in Vancouver does my machine work. I've had them do all my cylinder head valve machining and flow bench testing for the last 10 years or so. With a full facility engine dyno and Superflow cylinder head flow bench, they have one of the best reputations around.

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Did you check with Wong? I didn't think he was that much per hour, but the 4 hours sounds right.

$450 -$500 is a fairly standard price for a dyno tune and I have never seen it take 4 hours Usually 45 minutes once its strapped down and it's good to go. ( the rest the time is spent BS'ing)

I think if shops would just say it's a flat rate it would alleviate questions. Your paying for their experience and talent to tune your car and you accept it for that. Most of the time the tuner has files from a previous car that is close to your setup and it takes them 15 minutes at most to tweak it.

Hey guys I am looking into some headers for my LS1 swap into my 95 Z28.

I am thinking about Texas speed 1 7/8" long tube headers into a straight exhaust.

What do you guys think about the straight exhaust system? Or just no cats but glass packs/muffler?

And i have been reading up on the straight exhaust and people sayin the back pressure will make you lose hp and all that. But other sites sayin the hp loss is not significant and you get low rpm torque?

Thanks guys

1 7/8 headers are good if big power, cubes or boost is in mind pace setter is pretty good for the buck. if you go with true dual make sure to route into an xpipe

I can say from experience that tuning electronic fuel injection isn't exactly easy to do. If it were, then everybody would be doing it. With that being said, if you care to spend countless hours reading up on tuning it yourself, then you could just buy the tuning software and do it yourself for about the same price as a tuner shop charges for a dyno tune.

As for taking four hours to tune a car, kinda depends what all is being done. If all the customer wants is topend tuning at WOT, then yes, 45 minutes to an hour on a dyno would do it. The problem is that most people want it to idle nice and drive great at 5mph in a parking lot, and that is where the extra 3 hours is spent. Tuning WOT is pretty basic, tuning for good drivability is an art form.

Tuning is complicated, I've got HPT pro, and I usually end up cussing the laptop out more times than not, lol. After I get the blower on, it's going to Wong, simply because his experience will bring everything out of that thing it has, important with 6 pistons.

Hey Mike, got a question for you. We've got our old 351c block that lost a rod last season sitting on a stand, lucky us it came out the pan. But we're looking at over boring it and putting some sleeves in it for a backup engine (worst damage is a heavily scored cylinder). Just to get a feeling of it, how much did it cost you to sleeve the block? Different engines, but I'm curious.

You would need to call a machine shop for that quote. To install the Darton sleeves (all 8 of them) is around 1200.00 in labor alone but it's done on a huge CNC machine. The LS Darton sleeves cost around 190.00/each, if you're doing the math in your head, then you have an idea why I was so bummed about losing that block.... I have no idea what a typical sleeve would cost for a Ford engine. Does it need all 8 sleeved?

Mike
